Transforming a 2,206 sqft City Apartment with a Skyline View Into A Living Museum

The luxury of space was something that the homeowners value and should enjoy to the fullest. Thus, the communal areas within the 2,206 sqft apartment located in the heart of Orchard Road was designed after careful deliberation to ensure that the home would best support their lifestyles — be it catching up on emails on a laptop or hosting small, intimate gatherings over whisky and cigars.

Stepping out of the apartment’s private lift lobby, visitors are immediately treated to a small gallery foyer where shoes are discreetly hidden behind refinedly textured fabric wall panels and sculptures that the couple have collected from their travels adorn the bay window seats where the city view unfolds beyond.

Softly imbued into the home are also quiet references to the experiences the couple enjoyed during their time abroad, designed to remind them of their most beloved memories. The master bathroom, for example, features a custom built-in granite bath that is framed on 3 sides by full-length glass windows, reminiscent of their favourite Japanese onsen experience.

The homeowners brief was to create a timeless space that is minimalistic in its essence but conveys a sense of understated luxury. Given that the clients have a series of different artworks that they may want to showcase from time to time, we created a neutral backdrop of dark-toned walls and contrasting pale timber flooring to serve as the best canvas for their growing collection.

We always find powder rooms delightful to design as we’re always looking to instill guests with a sense of surprise and intrigue through interesting details. In this particular home, the rather compact powder room features a sculptural glass Hansgrohe Axor tap that spouts water into an iconic marble tray, as well as a special, custom curved mirror that conceals the unsightly ventilation windows. This helps maintain natural airflow within the space without compromising on visual appeal. We even considered how the placement of fresh leaves like eucalyptus could enhance the atmosphere of the powder room through its delightful scent and visual impact. A pendant light was well positioned to enigmatically interact with the leafy bouquet to bring about a diffused yet dramatic atmosphere into the space.
